Composer Ünal Murat Asil studied Jazz Composition and Film Scoring at Berklee College of Music between 1996-2001.

Afterwards, he started living in New York City where he  studied Third Stream Understanding, Music and Harmony of Hindemith, 19th Century Ballet Music, theory, analysis, Grana Piano Method with legendary composer Edgar Grana. In the meantime, he collaborated with numerous Broadway musicians.

In 2002, Asil met Dr. Philip Lasser which signifies a turning point in his life. Dr. Lasser who is one of the most prominent composers and theoreticians of our time and the second generation disciple of Boulanger School, accepted Asil as his student. This has set the foundations of his musical understanding in his work on harmony, counterpoint, analysis, aesthetics and composition in the method of Nadia Boulanger.

Simultaneously, Asil started to study piano with pianist Paul Verona, a student of Rosalyn Tureck and  advanced analysis techniques, composition and contemporary French composers and Piano Music,  with Dr. Benjamin C.S. Boyle who was the assistant of Dr. Lasser at the time.

In 2006 he was admitted to the master class of the European American Musical Alliance and attended Narcis Bonet, Mark Shapiro and Lane Harder classes in Paris. During this period, he met Composer/Pianist Michel Merlet who is the prominent representative of The Messiaen School and the student of Igor Stravinsky and Olivier Messiaen; who influenced Asil profoundly through his musical understanding and expression. Deciding to settle in Paris after this acquaintance, Asil, being exempted from entry examinations, was accepted to the composition and orchestration classes of Michel Merlet at Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris in 2008 and completed the degree in a short period of one year.

His works received prizes in counterpoint, harmony, orchestration and composition competitions he participated in.  Furthermore, his works on Messiaen’s symmetric modal theorems and orchestration studies were performed in Europe at new music festivals and received praise from music critics. In 2009, composer’s music was accepted into the ARA Ensemble’s permanent repertoire.

The composer  worked with Ahmet Ertegün and Arif Mardin on A&R projects when he lived in New York and his collaborations with producer Volga Calderon, a member of the Producers Guild of America Advisory Board, helped him step into the world of cinema and TV. Asil is a member of European Film Academy (EFA) and the founder of CAZevi (Jazz House) and Müzikal Kumpanyası  (Musical Company).
